Parfait exemple du style minimaliste du compositeur, la fanfare Short Ride in a Fast Machine a été créée en 1986 par le Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Si, dans Shaker Loops , des motifs mélodiques répétitifs s’entrelacent, créant une texture sonore en perpétuelle transformation, The Chairman Dances dispensent « des thèmes parfois sinueux et sentimentaux, parfois pleins de bravoure et bondissants ».
